Can you do a root canal on an infected tooth

Usually a tooth infection is in the root or nerve. You can try antibiotics and it may work but it also may come back again. That would be my first line of attack. I had a root canal a few times, once when I had one on a TINY tooth it gave me the biggest grief.

Your tooth has soft tissue on the inside called the dental pulp.

When this tissue gets inflamed or infected your tooth gets sensitive or even. Are there hidden dangers to getting a root canal? Does an infected tooth always need a root canal? What are the most common root canal side effects? How can you tell your tooth needs a root canal?

You probably assumed that the root canal and crown took care of the initial problem 1. But this is not always the case. Root canal therapy is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or infected.

Once the nerve becomes infected , a root canal treatment is the only way to remove the infected nerve and save the tooth. Root canal is a dental procedure performed for treating a severely infected tooth or a decaying tooth caused due to other problems. The term root canal is colloquially used to denote the central space of a tooth , where blood vessels and nerves are present. Root canal treatments are often necessary when decay works its way deep within a tooth , into the pulp. Infection to this cavity is not an unusual case.

An endodontist will typically treat your abscess with a root canal procedure or endodontic surgery. This involves removing the bacteria from the empty canals within your tooth , cleaning, shaping and filing the root canals , and sealing the empty space. Then, after some time to be certain the treatment was successful,. First, the tooth is examined and numbed.

Then, through an opening in the crown of the tooth , the pulp is removed from the pulp chamber and root canals. A root canal infection can occur for several reasons, though the basic root of the problem is always the penetration of bacteria into the pulp. Reasons for root canal infections are determined by the way the bacteria invades the tooth pulp.

So, while this study suggests the answer is to perform a root canal on the tooth with an infected pulp, the reality is that the root canal will not solve the problem and may actually make it worse. In another, albeit small, study, researchers investigated whether root canals and removal of wisdom teeth might indeed contribute to chronic inflammation. The immune system will fight bacteria and viruses that try to spread beyond the tooth.

With proper care, even teeth that have had root canal treatment can last a lifetime.

If your tooth failed to heal or develops new problems, you have a second chance. When ignore the infection spreads to the surrounding jawbone and can then travel to other parts of the body. In very basic terms, root canal treatment removes the bad parts of the tooth and dental pulp while leaving the good parts in place. Natural polymers are used to fill in the gaps left by the removal of the diseased areas.

The whole tooth is then sealed with a crown to protect it from further damage. Your dentist will need to clear the infection from your tooth with a procedure known as a root canal. Root surgery can also be performed to help salvage the tooth. In a worst case scenario, your dentist may recommend removing the tooth. When a tooth filling isn’t a viable option to treat the problem, your dentist will typically recommend root canal treatment.

A severe infection can result in a tooth extraction procedure which will later require more oral surgery with the placement of a dental implant or dental bridge. The long-term success of a bridge may be more predictable than that of a root canal treated tooth. A missed crack in the root of your tooth is one of the root canal complications that can lead to bacterial growth and the possibility of further treatment.
