Tooth sensitive to hot and cold after root canal

When do heat and cold hurt your teeth? How long does your tooth stay sensitive after a root canal? Does a sensitive tooth always need a root canal? Should I crown my tooth right after root canal? In general, after a root canal , teeth are sensitive to pressure.

There may be some throbbing and aching.

Heat sensitivity : A tooth needing root canal can be heat sensitive. Usually this woud indicate an infected tooth unless you are also senstive to cold. At any rate it would be a good thing to see your denist or endodonist to check your tooth. Unfortunately immediately after that I had intense pain when chewing on it. I got retreated today, and the chewing pain is much improve but the tooth still hurts when something cold touches it The doc said the tooth is infected.

Going in for another treatment on Wednesday. Sometimes you can have soreness from the root canal itself. The gums may be irritated or inflamed from the temporary.

The new crown should fix that problem. Try to clean the area well and see if the sensitivity goes away. You have swelling on the gum area around the tooth. The tooth may be sensitive to touch however there is no pain when drinking hot or cold liquids. The pain may be severe but when you brush or poke around the area the pain is relieved.

This type of pain is usually indicative of a periodontal abcess not a root canal problem. Something is definitely wrong there. A fracture down the root of a tooth can not be saved with a root canal and can only be extracted due to the constant flexing of the tooth apon pressure. It could be you have an extra root that was not detected on the radio graph, which is not that rare. In that case you should be able to still feel cold , too.

Teeth have several canals and some of them are difficult to detect, especially in molars. It’s possible a dentist may overlook an infected canal , leaving a bit of nerve inside the tooth or a small pocket for bacteria to form an infection. If a nerve is left behin your tooth will remain sensitive to hot and cold as it was before the procedure. Teeth are protected by enamel, which is their first defense against hot, col sticky and abrasive items.

When this enamel wears down, it can cause tooth decay , which exposes sensitive nerves within the pulp of the teeth. Enamel can become weaker with age, an acidic or sugary diet and a history of acid reflux disease. If your tooth pain is caused by a left over nerve, your tooth will be sensitive to hot and cold.

On the other han if the pain is caused by a bacterial infection, your tooth will be sensitive to pressure. A repeat root canal treatment will have to be scheduled with your dentist or endodontist to solve this problem. After a root canal procedure, it is normal for a person to feel heat and cold sensitivity for a few days.

But later on this subsides. However, if heat sensitivity after root canal occurs for several months after the procedure, the person should consult a dentist immediately. The first is reversible pulpitis, where the tooth will be sensitive but the pulp will heal and get better.

The second is irreversible pulpitis, where the pulp is. No prior problems with tooth. I had a small cavity in a top back tooth. After it was fille I had such problems that the dent.

I needed a root canal , although the cavity was not near the root. The thinnest part of the enamel covers the tooth roots, so when gums recede exposing the roots, teeth are more likely to be sensitive to cold. After root canal therapy is completed successfully on a tooth that tooth will no longer feel hot and cold sensitive. Go back and let them test the teeth.

But since the crown, I have had sensitivity just by barely touching the sides of my tooth. Likely possibility that one of the Adjacent tooth or Opposing tooth on the same side of the arch may be having pulpitis. This could be more like a Referred pain originating from one of the teeth close to the root canal treated tooth.
