Implant assisted overdenture

What is implant assisted overdentures? An implant-assisted denture (i. e., overdenture ) is a type of dental prosthetic that can be used to replace multiple teeth missing throughout the mouth or even an entire row of teeth. It works by placing surgical grade titanium posts directly into the jawbone to restore the root structure of the lost teeth, and these are then attached to ball-shaped metal connectors called abutments that show above the gum line.

Dental implants can frequently be situated to maximize use of available bone in areas where it is naturally thicker and stronger, diminishing or eliminating the need for bone grafts. While these dentures help to restore a patient’s ability to talk confidently and to eat comfortably, they do not fully replicate a natural bite and must be removed at night and for cleaning.

An implant-supported denture is a type of overdenture that is supported by and attached to implants. A regular denture rests on the gums, and is not supported by implants. Employing a systematic approach that identified both patient risk and prognosis using data gathered during the patient examination, a treatment plan was developed that included extraction of structurally compromised teeth and the use of implant-assisted complete overdentures. Designed with female attachments on the implant and male attachments on the inside of the denture, the attachments fit together to provide retention. However, bone and soft tissue are responsible for most of the support.

The idea is to identify a clearly defined definitive treatment plan as the desired end-goal in an effort to improve the overall treatment outcome while providing the added benefit of distributing the overall cost of treatment over time.
