Root canal infection years later

You probably assumed that the root canal and crown took care of the initial problem 1. But this is not always the case. New decay can expose the root canal filling material to bacteria, causing a new infection in the tooth. A loose, cracked or broken crown or filling can expose the tooth to new infection.

A tooth sustains a fracture. A great example is my husband Manuel.

He lived with an infected root canal for over years. If a tooth becomes infected again years after root canal has been done, it can often be retreated. However, in certain situations, such as tooth fracture , root decay that is too deep, or severe bone loss around the tooth, your dentist may have no choice but to extract the affected tooth. I have a possible infection in an upper left molar. I have tenderness to touch pressure at the very top of the gum line near the cheek. The opening at the gum line between this molar and the adjacent molar is contantly sore and imflamed. Any missed root canal to treat the infection can result in infection and toothache years after root canal. Abscesses on the gums: Our gum is attached externally to the bone and tooth.

The attached gum is protected from infection by proper oral brushing and flossing. The crown was placed on a few weeks after the root canal. Before crown went on I heard a crack- dentist had suspected a crack and hoped to save tooth by a root canal and crown. Now years later I still feel some pain in the tooth.

I gargle with Collodial Siver and sometimes rinse with coconut oil. Sometimes, it is clear from the beginning that the root canal is not working as planned. Other times, it may be years later that a problem arises.

The problem is usually re- infection of the root canal or a broken, fractured root. It was terrific until about yrs ago. My dentist checked it out and said there was an infection in it that had to be cleaned out.

A root canal tooth is also vulnerable to fracture over time. It could also be referred pain from another structure including adjacent teeth or even your jaw joint. You will need an - x-ray, thorough exam and history taking to determine the source of pain and possible infection.

When you get a root canal , the root is removed so you should not feel any pain at all in that tooth. So the fact that you are having pain is most likely due to the missed nerve like the dentist mentioned. You can try brushing with Sensodyn for weeks (if you can bare it) and see if you feel better.
