Multiple root canals

Can you get two root canals at once? Are fillers safe for someone who has had multiple root canals? What are the symptoms of a bad root canal? How can I prevent root canals?


The endodontist could not believe she did it even though I urged her to do root canals. This many root canals does not seem normal to me, but my dentist says sometimes it happens.

I floss two or three times a day and brush my teeth also two or three times a day (at least twice for both), I started using a Sonicare brush after the first two root canals. A root canal can be done in either one or multiple visits.


According to the Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry, there is no statistical difference between performing a root canal therapy in one or multiple visits. Sometimes there are more than one root canal per root. Some teeth have a more variable internal anatomy than others.


An unusual root canal shape, complex branching (especially the existence of horizontal branches), and multiple root canals are considered as the main causes of root canal treatment failures. Teeth have multiple tiny canals that are difficult to clean. Root canals are more invasive procedures, and depending upon the teeth involve some dentists may refer you to an endodontist specialist.


You should feel free to discuss the procedure and what it entails with your dentist who can either do the root canals himself or herself or refer you to a specialist. As complete sterilization was not possible with biomechanical preparation and irrigation, intracanal medicaments were used to ensure the complete eradication of bacteria. But some characteristically have, or at least often have, more.

The pulp or pulp chamber is the soft area within the root canal. It is more challenging to perform root canal treatment on a tooth that has multiple roots. In addition to the roots’ number and location, their shape influences the procedure.
