Final restoration after root canal

What are the final steps in a root canal? Does root canal treatment last forever? What to expect after root canal treatment? How long will a root canal treatment last?


Scott Norton ( practicing Endodontist in Louisville , KY) always stresses to his patients that a final restoration needs to be placed soon after a root canal. Four weeks or less is the optimal time to have your tooth permanently restored.

Every tooth treated will need a final restoration. This page discusses the different options you have in deciding how your tooth is rebuilt (crown vs. filling), and details that need to be considered when selecting between them. Restoring the Tooth After Root Canal For small cavities in front teeth, your dentist may place a tooth-colored filling after a root canal. The hole drilled in the back of the tooth to find the canal also will need a filling. Often referred to as root canal therapy and provides an effective means of saving a tooth that might otherwise require extraction.


If a tooth fractures below the gums, there’s no way to save it and it must be extracted. Most teeth require a protective crown after a root canal. Patients risk a fractured tooth by waiting too long to return to the dentist for crown placement.

This is not a question with a simple answer.

This may be possible if your tooth has an existing crown and the crown is functionally sound. If a person experiences persistent inflammation or infection after a root canal , they may require a surgical procedure called a root -end resection. Managing root canal pain at home Over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers should be sufficient to relieve the pain after a root canal.


A ‘GOOD CORONAL SEAL’ The development of apical areas occurs only in the presence of microbial invasion of the canal spaces. Laboratory studies have shown that bacteria can reach the apex of root filled teeth in as short a period. Many teeth fixed with a root canal can last a lifetime. Also, because the final step of the root canal procedure is application of a restoration such as a crown or a filling, it will not be obvious. Pulp vitality tests cost about $4 and pulp capping procedures cost about $6 not including the cost of the final restoration.


Food does not get stuck if the crown is done from a good authorised lab. The cost for treating a root canal obstruction is approximately $400. A filling in future might lead to fracture of teeth.

For this purpose, a dentist may install an artificial crown, instead of the treated tooth. Root canal aftercare does not require any special measures from a patient, other than monitoring any feelings of pain and careful use of the treated tooth, taking into account that is not as strong as before the infection. Molars and premolars that have had root canal therapy should be protected with a crown that covers the cusps of the tooth.
