Tooth with four roots

The distal (rear-most) root typically just has one canal, but it may have two (which is the case with the tooth shown in this video). That makes for a total of four root canals present in this lower first molar. When viewing this video, look for the two separate pairs of openings. This is totally normal. Generally, cross sections of teeth are shown in textbooks and pictures, so it gives the impression they all have just two roots.


Your canines and incisors only have two, though.

Maxillary first molar is one of the most treated and the least understood tooth in the dental arch.
