Surgical endodontics

Endodontic surgery can be used to locate small fractures or hidden canals previously undetected on X-rays during the initial treatment. Surgery may also be needed to remove calcium deposits in root canals, or to treat damaged root surfaces or the surrounding bone of the tooth. Coupled with the introduction of new instruments and magnification, refined principles of soft and hard tissue management, use of tissue regenerative techniques and materials and enhanced principles of wound closure, surgical endodontics has become a highly predictable procedure when practised by well-trained clinicians. The application of these principles and techniques by the endodontic specialist will ensure the retention of many teeth that may otherwise be considered non-salvageable.

When retreatment of endodontic therapy is unsuccessful or not possible, surgical treatment may be required.

Occasionally, this non- surgical procedure will not be sufficient to heal the tooth and your endodontist or dentist will recommend surgery. The reason for failure should be carefully diagnosed before surgery is prescribed. Non-surgical endodontic treatment is the use of biologically acceptable chemical and mechanical treatments of the root canal system to promote healing and repair of the periradicular tissues.

What are endodontic procedures?

A surgical endodontic procedure is performed to save a tooth from extraction when a root canal is insufficient to heal a tooth. The most common surgery used to save damaged teeth is an apicoectomy or root-end resection. Damaged root surfaces or the surrounding bone may also be treated with this procedure. But if symptoms persist even after successful non- surgical endodontic treatment your endodntist may advise surgery to save your tooth. Usually, a tooth that has undergone a root canal can last the rest of your life and never need further endodontic treatment.

This injured pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. This therapy usually involves local anesthesia.

Typically these operating microscopes have manual magnificationn changers, and Manual focus, however there are units that are more extensive and combine motorized zoom, and focus features that are typically controlled via pistol. Non- surgical retreatment may provide a bet-ter opportunity to clean the pulp space than a surgical approach. However there are clinical situations when non- surgical root canal retreatment is inappropriate.
