Second root canal on same tooth

What are the symptoms of a bad root canal? When root canals go bad? Why would an old root canal start causing pain? What is the difference between a tooth extraction and a root canal? To make a long story short, I have to have a second root canal on a tooth that apparently had a bad root canal. I was wondering how the procedure differs from the original. New decay can expose the root canal filling material to bacteria, causing a new infection in the tooth.
