Dental crown and root canal

Some people seem to think that if a tooth needs a crown that it also has to have root canal therapy. To the contrary however, these are entirely separate procedures and most certainly one can be performed without the need for the other. Placing a crown after a root canal was done adds protection so the tooth can handle more pressure. While a crown makes sense after a root canal , does it also work the other way around? Root canals are needed when the pulp of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed.
