Root canal ear infection

Is a crown necessary immediately after root canal? Does an infection always lead to a root canal? Does ear infection always need antibiotic?


It’s well-known you cannot leave a dead organ in your body or it will cause severe infection. Root canal is a hollow space inside the tooth.

Chronic root canal infection. It surrounds and protects the pulp, which comprises nerves and blood vessels of the tooth. This space can get infected and the condition is known as root canal infection.


If bacteria accesses the dental pulp (often via tooth decay or tooth damage), it can cause a painful infection of the tooth. Infections can hide in the miles of dentinal tubules and accessory canals. The immune system will fight bacteria and viruses that try to spread beyond the tooth.


Again, no one would know such a problem exists unless we have the correct imaging, as you can see here.

Although it is rare, it is in fact possible to get a mild to serious infection af ter a root canal procedure. It is important to be aware of and recognize symptoms of infection early on to ensure the infection does not spread or lead to additional. Ear pain : Depending on which tooth was treate particularly an upper back molar, the infection could cause ear pain. If the tooth had a root canal and you are still having ear pain , check back with you dentist. There may be residual infection , or you may have a different dental problem (another tooth or TMJ disorder).


The pain that you are describing is probably due to a Temporo mandibular joint injury (TMJ), which is presenting as an ear infection. TMJ is a hinge that connects the lower part of the jaw and the temporal bone in the skull. It facilitates activities like chewing, talking, yawning, side-to-side movement of the jaw. Some people report ear pain after undergoing a root canal treatment procedure.


This should only be a cause for concern if the pain is severe or lasts for weeks. You can ask your dentist which painkillers are recommended to treat ear pain before and after a root canal, but generally, acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) will work. If you have an active infection during root canal therapy, there is a chance the infection blocks the anesthetic from working and numbing the area. If you have a fever after a root canal treatment, contact your endodontist or dentist immediately.


Pain or soreness for a few days after a root canal , especially in the area of the affected tooth and gums, is normal. You probably assumed that the root canal and crown took care of the initial problem 1. You may be worried about what caused the infection , and you may also be wondering if root canal infections spread.
