Tooth hurts worse after root canal

Why is my tooth sensitive after root canal? Does a tooth always hurt when you need a root canal? What is the recovery time after a root canal? What happens to a tooth after a root canal is done? Later a crown or filling is put off the tooth so that it is restored.
