The majority of failed non surgical root canals are caused by problems near the tip (apex) of the root. Some soreness, swelling and pain are absolutely normal after the apicoectomy surgery. Apicoectomy recovery is usually quick and without complications. Drink plenty of fluids for the first hours after surgery.
If you are a smoker, please do your best to avoid smoking for – days after your procedure.
DO NOT DRINK THROUGH A STRAW! Place an ice bag (bags of frozen peas work very well) to your cheek or jaw for minutes on, minutes off, for hours. Your local anesthesia will wear off in four to eight hours. If applicable, take the following medications as prescribed by our office: Motrin 600mg – One tablet every hours for days. Your tooth and surrounding gum tissue may be slightly tender for several days as a result of manipulation during treatment and the previous condition of your tooth.

Some minor bleeding is expected after apicoectomy. A little oozing is normal and may persist for several hours. It will usually subside quickly, and stop within an hour or two after surgery. Saliva washes over the blood clots and dyes the gauze red even after bleeding from the wound has actually stopped. Excessive bleeding may be controlled by first GENTLY rinsing or wiping an old clots from your mouth, then placing a gauze pad over the area and biting down firmly for minutes.
You can brush your teeth as normal but be gently and cautious in the area of the surgery. No rinsing should be done the day of surgery. Rinsing should start the day after surgery.
Mix a teaspoon of salt in a tall glass of warm water and rinse with this solution 4-times per day. Avoid smoking for at least days after surgery. The dentist will open and lift the gum away from the tooth so the root is easily accessible. The infected tissue, called granulation tissue, will be removed along with a small part of the root tip. After stitches removal you can go back to your usual diet.
A week after the apicoectomy procedure, your dentist will remove the stitches (if they do not dissolve by them self). Slight bleeding is expected. During root-canal treatment, the canals are cleaned and inflamed or infected nerve tissue is removed as a goal of this procedure.
