First day with immediate dentures

What to expect when getting your first dentures? How long will it take to adjust to new dentures? When your dentist recommends dentures? It may only take a few months from your first appointment to the day where you’ll feel fully at ease with your new dentures.


You should expect to make four or five appointments with your dentist over a period of three to six weeks , but this does vary from person to person.

For the first days , keep your denture in at all times except to clean. You can use warm water rinses as described above during this time. To clean the denture , partially fill the sink with water to cushion the impact if the denture is dropped. For patients requiring a complete immediate denture , the back teeth are often extracted six to eight weeks prior to the fabrication phase. This allows the extraction sites to heal and a better-fitting immediate complete denture to be fabricated.


The fabrication phase consists of impressions, bite records,. I remember my first few days when they pulled my uppers and immediate denture. At least for a week plus.

Dentures , whether full or immediate , may make you salivate at first , and even give you a slight tummy-ache, because your body thinks the foreign object in your mouth is food. Drinking water and sucking a (sugar-free) candy can help with this.


Obviously, this significantly defeats the purpose of the immediate denture. You may feel that the bite needs adjustment or that there are pressure spots that need to be relieved. The immediate dentures provide valuable information to the dentist in construction of the final dentures , such as the proper height, face form, esthetics and speech. Patients need to give time to get used to immediate dentures. After the mouth heals, final dentures are made.
