Zygomatic arch implants

It is an alternative to bone grafting.

This procedure has a long track record of success. These teeth implants significantly reduce the time, expenses, and the number of surgeries compared to regular dental implants. In most cases we are able to give patients same day teeth.

The atrophic edentulous maxilla represents a challenge when clinicians are planning implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitation. Via dental cheekbone surgery, they are securely anchored in the dense zygomatic arch , or cheek bone, which provides a strong and stable foundation. But there is an alternative. As the name suggests these implants are fixed to the zygomatic arch. They are used as the alternative to the old conventional technique.

These implants provide the support for upper implant bridgework where other implants do not work. Once anchored in place, zygomatic dental implants , along with two to four traditional implants in the upper front jaw, provide vital support for a full arch prosthesis. Considering the complex interface between implant and bone, oral and sinus mucosa, the use of a rough implant surface may be questioned.

Although the bone integration of surface-modified implants seems to be facilitated by a rough surface, the nonsubmerged rough surfaces may attract plaque formation. While traditional implants are placed in the jawbone, zygomatic dental implants are placed in the cheekbone which is very dense and provides excellent support. This difference in placement location means that zygomatic implants can provide a secure foundation to support teeth when older technology and traditional dental implants do not work due to bone loss. As a patient wears dentures, the pressure that the denture places upon the jawbone leads to progressive bone loss. Overtime this can lead to such severe bone loss that a denture will no longer fit, no matter how well it’s made, or how much adhesive is used.

In these situations where bone loss in the upper jaw becomes so severe,. The procedure takes place at a Hospital, under general anesthesia and an infection controlled environment. The first part of the procedure is placing the zygomatic implants , then, the prosthodontist will place a temporary denture fixed to the implants.
