Large Network of Providers. Learn How Aetna Dental Plans Work. Find Out How You Can Save. Are all dentist trained to do root canals? What type of dentist does crowns and root canals?

What medicine does a dentist use for a root canal? A root canal (also known as an endodontic treatment ) is a serious procedure, but one that specialists handle every day. Before engaging in any type of dental work, it’s important to know the facts about root canals. Does a root canal hurt?

The procedure involves removing the damaged area of the tooth (the pulp), cleaning and disinfecting it and then filling and sealing it. Root canal therapy may involve one or more dental visits. Your dentist or endodontist will perform the necessary steps to save your tooth: Your tooth is numbed for your comfort.

A thin, flexible sheet of latex or non-latex material called a rubber dam is placed over your tooth to keep it dry. An endodontist is a dentist that has specialized in doing only root canals. If you need a root canal, your dentist can best advise you as to who should perform the procedure. Many dentists provide root canal treatment in their office and refer complicated cases to endodontists. The purpose of this is to allow a tooth, without a living nerve, to remain in the mouth without pain for chewing and for cosmetic reasons.

During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form. The narrow channels beneath the pulp chamber in the inner part of the tooth are hollowed out and cleane and the roots are filed with flexible nickel titanium files.

During the procedure, a dentist uses a drill to remove both the nerve and pulp and seals up the tooth to protect against further damage. In root canal treatment, the space inside the tooth from the center, known as the pulp chamber , that travels down the length of the root to the tip (or apex) is called a canal , or more specifically, a root canal. When rotary nickel titanium (NiTi) files are used in canals with flat-oval or tear-shaped cross sections, a circular bore is created due to the rotational action.

The dental pulp is a soft substance in the center of the tooth that consists of the nerve, blood vessels, and connective tissue. The pulp is made up of nerves, connective tissue, and blood vessels that help the tooth grow. In the majority of cases, a general dentist or endodontist will perform a root canal while you’re under local anesthesia.

Most patients’ missinterpute a root canal as removing the root from a tooth, but the root actually remains, just without nerves in it. During the root canal process, the canals are reshape cleanse and filled with a replacement material called gutta percha. Gutta percha is the predominant material used to fill. With root canal surgery, the dentist enters through the gum and bone directly to the end of the root , or what is called the apex. The very tip of the root is then removed.

When this tip is the source of the infection, this can often cure the infection. Endodontic therapy” or “root canal treatment” are the dental terms to describe this procedure. This was a case I treated at my Birmingham, Alabama office that (I hope) illustrates a very common situation (a tooth needing a root canal , buildup, and crown) and an explanation of why all those things are sometimes needed to save a tooth.
