The root (and the canal) has an oval cross-section with the narrower dimension oriented mesiodistally. The majority of these teeth have a single canal with a type configuration. This tooth is situated between the canine and second premolar and has some characteristics common to each of them. Often considered an enigma to the endodontist, the mandibular first premolar with dual canals dividing at various levels of the root can generate complex mechanical problems.
The coronal anatomy consists of a well-developed buccal cusp and a small or almost nonexistent lingual outgrowth of enamel. For more dental anatomy videos, please see my channel.
First premolars usually exhibit basic one root and one canal anatomy. The occurrence of three roots in mandibular first premolar has not been commonly reported in literature. A Tooth Atlas error, they mean the second premolar. The buccal view of the first premolar is almost bilaterally symmetrical, but not quite. The mesial cusp ridge is slightly shorter than the distal cusp ridge.
The maxillary second premolar and both the mandibular first and second premolars usually have one centrally located root canal. However, if the canal appears to be situated under either the buccal or lingual cusp, look carefully for a second canal under the opposite cusp. The opening is a narrow oval in shape.
The buccal cusp of the maxillary first premolar is higher than the palatal cusp.
The function is to tear food during the mastication process and to assist the canines. The first mandibular premolars are composed of two cusps, and from the buccal side, it appears as a large and a sharp tooth. Buccal Height of Contour (mesial) The buccal height of contour is located in the cervical third of the crown. The average length of mandibular first premolar teeth was 21. Mandibular first premolars have a mesiolingual groove of the time.
All the teeth had cusps. One hundred thirty four teeth (9 ) had one root, and just teeth () had two roots. Mesial invagination of root was found in teeth (1). See the mesio-lingual developmental groove.
What is the Mesio-Lingual Developmental Groove? As the secondary antagonist of the maxillary canine, the buccal cusp of the mandibular first premolar is most strongly developed. The prevalence of C-shaped root canals in the first mandibular premolar varies between different ethnic groups. The maxillary first and second premolars and the mandibular first premolar s are developed from four lobes just like the anterior teeth. The orthodontist often identifies missing second premolars in the mixed dentition using routine panoramic radiographs.
The mandibular second premolars usually develop from five lobes—three buccal and two lingual. The early decisions that orthodontists make for the congenitally missing teeth often have an impact on dental health for the rest of their patient’s life. In the adult dentition, first molars are distal to second premolars.
Upper 1st premolars - roots. Lower 1st and 2nd premolars (bicuspids) - Just have root.
Variability in the number of root canals. Cups of Carabelli Maxillary molars: Cups of Carabelli is commonly seen on the first molar in maxillary molar.
