If a root canal fails can it be redone

Causes of failed root canal treatment The most frequent reason is persistent of microorganisms in the root canal due to failure to remove all of them at the time of initial treatment. There is no way this file can be manipulated to enter a side branch that comes off at a right angle. Now these anomalies occur in a small minority of teeth, so the large majority of root canal treatments are successful. If a root canal treatment fails , re-treatment can remedy the situation, but only in somewhere around to of the cases.

With proper care, even teeth that have had root canal treatment can last a lifetime.

If your tooth failed to heal or develops new problems, you have a second chance. When a root canal treatment fails , the first course of action is to attempt to redo the root canal treatment. It is usually done by an Endodontist ( root canal specialist) or an experienced general dentist. Why do I need another endodontic procedure? Absolutely: The root canal procedure eliminates the infection and the pain, but does not give immunity from decay.

Even with a crown, which is commonly needed after the root canal is done, decay can occur if hygiene is not adequate. Brush, floss, and see your dentist for follow-up care.

If this infection is allowed to continue to develop without proper treatment, the infection can potentially spread to other teeth in the area or cause illness in other parts of the body. What has happened is that when the original root canal was done, the dentist most likely either missed a branch of the canal or did not get all the way down to the apex of the root so not all of the bacterial infection was cleaned out that. If done correctly, root canals can last for years and never cause any pain.

If you wait too long, your jawbone could get infected. Notice excessive tooth pain that does not fade over time. I had a root canal about ten years ago, and the tooth has always be slightly shaking. One year ago when I saw a endodontist for another root canal , he saw the X-ray of the tooth that had the old root canal and said it was a bad job or not really a root canal.

A previous failed root canal can be a major detriment to having an implant. The problem is related to a hole that develops in your bone which dissolves the very thin outer wall of bone. Although root canals work, they are not 1 effective. Some teeth may not respond as expected to the root canal therapy.

Your crown has an open margin (in the location of the decay) and as such no longer creates an intact seal over the tooth. The procedure involves in the removing of the damaged area of the upper tooth, pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the region and then filling and sealing it with a cap. The bigger problem is each time it is re-done , there is less of a chance it will be successful.

A root canal treatment can be re-tried several times.

Because the nerve is no longer in a root canal-treated tooth, you won’t be able to feel any pain associated even if you do have an infection. For this reason, we recommend setting up a visit with a holistic or biological dentist who can evaluate it. Symptoms may be pain, tenderness on biting, swelling of the gum overlying the roots, increased mobility or the presence of sinus pus. To be done by a properly trained dentist or an endodontist.

You are not clear in describing your problem. As far as I have understood I feel your problem lies with the filling done to cover the cavity prepared to access. New problems too, can jeopardize a tooth that initially had successful endodontic (endo-inside, dontic-tooth) or root canal treatment. For example: New decay can expose the root canal filling material to bacteria, causing a new infection in the tooth. A loose, cracked or broken crown or filling can expose the tooth to new infection.

Short fills: The second biggest reason for root canal failure is the multitude of inadequately filled root canals. It is so much easier and quicker to fill root canals short. This is because the most complex part of the root canal system is usually the last few millimeters of the root. Besides retreatment, the alternatives may include endodontic surgery or extraction (removal) of the tooth.

However, a missing tooth should be replaced by a dental implant, a bridge or a partial denture. Gum boil visible in photo). Should I attempt to save the tooth through re-treatment and a new crown or move straight on to abstraction and implant ?
