Pain in tooth that had root canal years ago

Why would an old root canal start causing pain? Does a tooth die after root canal? What is the recovery time after a root canal?

The most common symptom of a failed root canal is pain in the tooth that does not go away after several days. Although placement of a crown helps protect the treated root from fracturing during chewing, a crack may still develop years later.

Additionally, it is rare but possible that the root canal treatment itself can cause a fracture in a tooth root. It was terrific until about yrs ago. My dentist checked it out and said there was an infection in it that had to be cleaned out. If the tooth was not infected around the tip of the root , that’s when overfilling is likely to cause pain after a root canal.

It’s rare, but a tiny bubble of air can also be forced out of the root tip , causing pressure and pain. I have not seen the x ray and the condition of the root canaled tooth , but usually you have a few options: redo the root canal , extract the tooth and put an implant. Any missed root canal to treat the infection can result in infection and toothache years after root canal.

Abscesses on the gums : Our gum is attached externally to the bone and tooth. The attached gum is protected from infection by proper oral brushing and flossing. If abscessed tooth develops after root canal procedure it can lead to toothache even after years of root canal. A root canal is more likely to fail if a permanent filling or crown is not placed to protect the tooth. A root canal can fail within days, weeks, months or even many years after the procedure has been completed and will be marked by a return of pain.

I also have a partial plate replacing my upper front teeth. The tooth has a gold crown. The clasps attach to the problem molar and the adjacent outer molar. Once the root canal is complete, the tooth should be back to full functioning and should not cause any more pain.

Takeaway Root canal treatments are carried out millions of times each year. Life time after root canal treatment is app 6-years after that they will tell you take that tooth off. Asked in Oral Health and Dental Care , Wisdom Teeth and. There is a ligament around the tooth called the periodontal ligament which is very sensitive to pressure. If there is even the slightest high spot on the porcelain of the crown, you could be aggravating this tooth by irritating the ligament due to the high spot.

In this scenario, there would be no swelling and no xray evidence that there was anything wrong with the root canal.

It has been several years , but I had a root canal done in a tooth and it continued to hurt for several weeks afterward. They kept looking at it and trying to figure out what was going on. I ended up having a procedure where they cut a window in my gum line and cut off the ends of the tooth ,. It could also be referred pain from another structure including adjacent teeth or even your jaw joint. You will need an - x-ray, thorough exam and history taking to determine the source of pain and possible infection. Re: Toothache on tooth that had root canal yrs ago hey sweetie, did you ever have a permenant crown put over that tooth ? The most probable culprit is a missed root when the first root canal was performed.

When you get a root canal , the root is removed so you should not feel any pain at all in that tooth. So the fact that you are having pain is most likely due to the missed nerve like the dentist mentioned.
